Setting up a website will require plenty of time. When the website is up, it is a tedious job to check the links manually. The free Xenu’s Link Sleuth will check the links of any website automatically and produce a nice HTML report after that. You can specify the number of depths for this link tracker to traverse. Based on the final report, you can fix the broken links and broken images.

The Snipping Tools in Windows Vista does not allow us to create a video capture of the screen. We found a free software Jing that can do the job. It can take a picture of your screen, record a video of your screen and share the content over the web, instant messenger and email.

Creation of online account is required. 2GB of storage at Screencast.com is provided.

Getting the message digest of a file is extremely useful to check that file integrity, i.e. the file has not been changed in transit or over a period of time. This is useful when you have downloaded a file and you would like to know whether the file has been correctly downloaded. If both the file message digest listed on the ftp server and message digest generated on the newly downloaded file are the same, these files are exactly the same. Any Bit level difference will result in very different message digests.

However, when there are multiple files and directory involved, you might need a script to generate the message digest. The good news is that md5deep can do the job well. You can generate the hash codes/message digests on the system directory and compare the hash codes after a month to see whether important system files have been changed by malwares and viruses.

md5deep can compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, Tiger, or Whirlpool message digests on an arbitrary number of files.

When we are at download sites listing more than 5 big files, we have to manually download files one by one to prevent overloading of our download link. Using Internet Explorer browser to download software can take ages. Usually Internet Explorer will like to stop downloading before 100% and process needs to be restarted.

Flashget is a good download manager and it can resume download after a download break. It is also tightly integrated with Internet Explorer so that clicking on a file download will automatically activate the Flashget program.

We like the feature that can download all the files listed on a single HTML page in two steps:

Select download all links by Flashget

Select download all links by Flashget by right-clicking on the Internet Browser

Select the files to download

Select the Files to download

By setting the connection to one, the files will be downloaded one after another, automatically.

Using the Print Screen and Shift Print Screen in Windows system is usually the case to capture the screen. This is helpful for sending error messages on your applications to remote technical support personnel by email. Windows Vista has a built-in tool that does more. It is normally found in your windows\system32 directory.

%SystemRoot%\system32\SnippingTool.exe

By running the snipping tool, you can select the region you wish to capture. After that, highlight the specific region and give a short description.

This is useful for us to send change request to webmaster. Circle the link with a highlighter and mark it as dead link. Circle the text and mark the spelling mistake. Strike-out the entire unnecessary paragraphs. Highlight the web browser address so that the actual document can be found easily. This is so much like working on HTML hardcopy and making notes without having to waste paper by printing. The only problem here is that you cannot capture the active cursor or drop down list on the web browser. For displaying drop down list, please revert to the old school screen capture and Windows Paint under the Accessories menu.
